Where to Go for Christmas in 2026
Where to Go for Christmas in 2026
Quick answer: The best places to travel at Christmas in 2026 are Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland for snow and Santa, Vienna, Prague and Nuremberg for Christmas markets, and New York for the Rockefeller Center tree. For a warm Christmas getaway, pick Hawaii, a Caribbean cruise, Thailand or the Maldives. If you are visiting family in India, Goa and Kolkata have the biggest celebrations.
Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday, so you get a three-day weekend from 25 to 27 December. Take 21 to 24 December off and you have nine days in a row for four days of leave.
What’s New for Christmas Travel in 2026
Four updates matter for Christmas trips from the USA this year.
- Europe (US passports): The EU plans to launch ETIAS, a new online travel permit for visa-free visitors such as US citizens, in the last quarter of 2026. The fee is €20. No exact start date was set when we checked, so look it up before your December trip.
- Thailand (Indian passports): Since 15 September 2026, Indian passport holders can visit Thailand visa-free for up to 30 days. The Indian Embassy in Bangkok advises carrying at least THB 20,000 in cash per person. See the Royal Thai Embassy update.
- Sri Lanka (US and Indian passports): Since 25 May 2026, the 30-day tourist ETA is free for both. You still apply online before you fly.
- New York: The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree arrives on 7 November and will be lit on 2 December 2026.

Best Places for a White Christmas Getaway
For snow at Christmas, go north to the Arctic or up into the Alps. These three places give you the best chance.
1. Rovaniemi, Finnish Lapland
Rovaniemi sits on the Arctic Circle and calls itself the official hometown of Santa Claus. At Santa Claus Village you can meet Santa, mail a card from his post office and cross the Arctic Circle line. The village is open all year and entry is free.
Expect deep snow, husky and reindeer rides, and a chance of the northern lights. Days are very short and temperatures often fall below 14°F (-10°C).
- Best for: Families with young kids
- US passport: No visa (ETIAS once it launches)
- Indian passport: Schengen visa
- Tip: Christmas week hotels and Santa tours sell out months ahead

2. Iceland
Iceland has 13 “Yule Lads”, playful folk characters who visit children one by one in the 13 nights before Christmas. Reykjavik adds street lights, a small Christmas village and warm geothermal pools. Around 21 December there are only about four hours of daylight, so plan sightseeing for midday.
- Best for: Northern lights, hot springs, adventure
- US passport: No visa (ETIAS once it launches)
- Indian passport: Schengen visa

3. Swiss Alps and Zurich
Switzerland gives you mountain chalets, snowy villages and scenic train rides. Spend a few days at the Christmas markets in Zurich, then head up to a ski village like Zermatt, Grindelwald or St. Moritz. Snow in the city is not certain, but high mountain resorts usually have good snow by late December.
- Best for: Couples, skiers, scenic trains
- US passport: No visa (ETIAS once it launches)
- Indian passport: Schengen visa

Best Christmas Cities in Europe for 2026
Europe is where Christmas markets began. Expect wooden stalls, lights, hot drinks and roasted nuts. One Schengen visa covers Germany, Austria, Czechia, France and Italy, so you can see two or three of the world’s best Christmas cities on one trip.
Vegetarian tip: Market food is mostly sausages, but you will also find potato pancakes, roasted chestnuts, pretzels, gingerbread and waffles. Ask for “Kinderpunsch”, a non-alcoholic hot punch, in Germany and Austria.
4. Nuremberg and Dresden, Germany
Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt is Germany’s best-known Christmas market. In 2026 it runs from 27 November to 24 December, 10 am to 9 pm, closing at 2 pm on Christmas Eve. Up to 180 red-and-white stalls fill the main square. Try Nuremberg gingerbread (Lebkuchen).
Dresden’s Striezelmarkt, first recorded in 1434, runs from 25 November to 24 December 2026. It is famous for Dresden Stollen, a fruit cake.
- Best for: First-time Christmas market trips
- Go: Early to mid December
5. Vienna, Austria
Vienna is a good choice for a longer stay. The City Hall market runs from 13 November to 26 December 2026, and the Schönbrunn Palace market stays open until 6 January 2027. - Best for: Couples, families, culture lovers
- Go: Any time in December, including Christmas week

Prague costs less than most big Christmas cities in Europe. The Old Town Square market runs from 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, so it is still open over Christmas and New Year.
- Best for: Budget trips, Christmas plus New Year

9. London, UK
London means lights on Oxford Street and Regent Street, window displays, ice rinks and markets by the river. The London Underground does not run on 25 December, so plan Christmas Day near your hotel. The UK is not in the Schengen area.
- Best for: Shopping, theatre, a first trip to Europe
- US passport: UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), apply online
- Indian passport: UK Standard Visitor visa

No long-haul flight and no new visa. These are the easiest Christmas trips if you live in the US.
10. New York City
New York has the best-known Christmas sights in the US. The Rockefeller Center tree will be lit on 2 December 2026. Add ice skating, the holiday windows on Fifth Avenue and a Broadway show. Expect 32°F to 45°F (0°C to 7°C) and the highest hotel prices of the year.
- Best for: Families, couples, first-time visitors
- Tip: Visit the tree on a weekday morning to skip the biggest crowds
11. Hawaii
Hawaii is the top warm Christmas trip for US families. You get beaches, volcano parks and humpback whales, which start arriving in late fall, with temperatures around 68°F to 80°F (20°C to 27°C). Christmas week is peak season for flights and hotels, so book early.

How to Plan Your Christmas Trip from the USA
Christmas is one of the busiest travel weeks of the year. These steps help you avoid high fares and paperwork problems.
- Book flights early. Fares climb fast from mid-December. Flying on 24 or 25 December is often cheaper than the weekend before.
- Use the long weekend. Christmas Day 2026 is a Friday. Taking 21 to 24 December off gives you nine days in a row.
- Indian passport? Start your visa now. You can apply for a Schengen visa up to six months before your trip, and December appointments fill up. Apply to the country where you will spend the most nights. Your passport must be valid at least three months after you leave Europe.
- Check your US re-entry papers. If you are on a US work or student visa, make sure your visa and documents let you return to the US after the holidays.
- Get travel insurance. It is required for a Schengen visa and helpful for winter flight delays.
- Check what’s open. Many places in Europe close on 25 December, and in Germany and Austria on 26 December too. Book your Christmas Day meal ahead.
